• Seven Great, Overlooked Game Soundtracks

Posted on Friday, January 15th, 2010. View Comments.

When it comes to classic game soundtracks, there are a few titles that come up again and again: Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and so on and so on. And while I agree that these are certainly the best of the best, there are still other truly great soundtracks that, for whatever reason, are simply overlooked entirely.

Luckily, Robot Vaudeville is here to reverse that trend and allow me to give some these games the recognition they deserve!

    Jungle Hunt

Taito’s Jungle Hunt is a great example of an early platformer, and the upbeat soundtrack perfectly complements the nonstop action on screen.

Although the entire soundtrack is made up of only one song (ignoring a few brief “level complete” and “game over” tunes here and there), it’s good enough that it never gets old, no matter how many times it repeats in a single game.

This may or may not be overlooked, depending on who you are.

    Duck Tales!!!!!
  • I have a hard time thinking of any Capcom game with bad music, really!

DuckTales is pretty famous for having good music though, I think--the music from the Moon level in particular has been done probably over a dozen times by various game cover bands.

I have to add in my love for Ultima 3: Exodus for the NES. It was one of the first games I remember playing when I was young, and the soundtrack is burned into my mind. Whenever there's some sort of confrontation in my life, the battle music immediately springs to mind, and sometimes I start singing it. Great way to lighten the mood! :D

American McGee's Alice was the best, hands down. How many games do you know that actually had their soundtrack released in CD form?
  • Philbur
    Ummmm.....CYBERWAR.?
One of the first CD-Rom games for PC....It was a 7-Disc monster that shipped in a folder the size of a vinyl record sleeve. Based on "The Lawnmower Man" and "Tron"....
The composer was (I think) System 7 and I have been looking for the original CD ever since....Amazing stuff....and all of you should check it out.

Mechwarrior 2 - the best music to stomp around to.
  • Jill
The mario sound track is cooler than the e cig!
  • Normally we try to remove spam from the comments, but this one was so ridiculous it had to stay.
  • I agree with Beetlejuice. One of my favorite's of all time. It is very hard to pick just one from that game.
  • Hah, yeah, it's really surprising how great the music is for what's otherwise a pretty mediocre game.
  • Completely missed Road Rash 3d. Best game/soundtrack evah
  • Sarihn
Interesting list, but I feel Strider for the NES should be on it. The title song alone is worthy of a spot.

marble madness had jaw dropping sound at the time, i still remember first playing it. the stereo sound sound coming from the stand up was amazing.
  • Hey Justin, I saw that when it was uploaded--nice work! There are very few Marble Madness remixes out there, but they're all very good (yours included, of course).
  • JustinTense
    I remixed Marble Madness's first track for OCR not that long ago;

Don't listen to the youtube version as it is overcompressed with skewed dynamics.
  • It's really a great soundtrack.

I just found a remix by Xoc of the "Practice" level music, in the style of Beck--it works surprisingly well.
  • Rise of the Triad isn't on this list? For shame!
  • boybunny
I do have to say that that was a hopeless list... Try some Amiga games. You may be surprised just how good the audio could really be back then if you had a real games machine.

Oh and 1983 had one arcade game that had exceptional sound...

    Dragons Lair http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvk8E9RwT5g&feature=related

Well it is a bit of a cheat, but the technique of reading the sound fx directly off the optical disc has been used on many modern console games. Unfortunately, Dragons Lair had to be one of the three worst games in the world for gameplay.
  • Hah, thanks, nice list! Though come on, Dragon's Lair is really kind of a cheat, don't you think!

The best soundtrack ever? Faxanadu for nes. Youtube it.
  • Ari
I think the best soundtrack I heard was "Castlevania 3", foreshadowed by its predecessors.
Every level was awesome and u could choose which level so you would end up in, so you could play same level and branch out to a different level with a different soundtrack. Amazing game too!
  • The Castlevania games did have good music (though I think I personally like the music from the first one just a liiittle better), and I think Konami finally got the formula right with Castlevania 3--not just the music, but as a whole. They took everything good from the first two games and really built on them.

Wow, no way dude thats like crazy!
