Younger readers may not believe it, but there was a time when screensavers were cool. And while there’s nothing inherently uncool about Starfield or Beziers today, the simple fact of the matter is, once you’ve seen Nintendo Saver, there’s just no going back.
I haven’t been hypnotized by a screensaver since I first laid eyes on 3D Maze back in 1995, but there’s just something about being able to watch 15 NES games tiled across your screen, all playing automatically and simultaneously, that brings a tear to the eye.
Nintendo Saver actually plays through the games (ROMs you’ve surely legally acquired and have somewhere on your computer) using UMF video files recorded with the UberNES emulator. You can even select any game video playing on screen and jump in or out at any time.
Setting up UberNES’s Nintendo Saver was a little more tricky than they’d have you think by reading their installation instructions, so here’s a short walk-through:
- Download the Nintendo Saver screensaver zip file: http://www.ubernes.com/nesscreensaver.html
- Unzip its contents and move the Nintendo Saver.scr file to your WindowsSystem32 directory.
- Download the UberNES emulator and run it: http://www.ubernes.com/download.html
- Create a database file when prompted by selecting your ROM directory.
- Go to your display properties and select the Screen Saver tab.
- Select Nintendo Saver and click Settings.
- Next to Movies Directory, click Download > Download All.
- For NES Database, choose the UberNES database file you created in step 4.
- Finally, edit any display or performance options you want–this will require some experimentation on your part!
Now just click Preview to check it out, and prepare to be amazed!
